Truck Drivers and Family Life

Jun 19, 2020

A truck driving career provides multiple benefits and stable job security for families. However, trucking jobs can sometimes require long hours away from home that can take a toll on family life if not discussed beforehand. Drivers can begin to feel isolated if they aren't accustomed to long periods of time away from family, and their families can reciprocate the feeling. At Sisbro, we believe family life is important so we offer Over the Road, Regional Lanes, and Dedicated Local Routes to allow drivers set family time. Some of the benefits we provide to make managing truck driving and family life easier are:

  • Home Time - Home 48 hours each week
  • Emergency Family Time - Get home ASAP when a family emergency arises
  • Live Loading - Choose whether you want to to live load or not
  • No Forced Dispatch - Never be forced to take a load
  • Family Health Insurance - 100% paid for
  • Bonuses - Opportunities to make extra income for your family

Local routes usually allow drivers to be home every time, but Regional Lanes and Over the Road routes require more time away from home. In order to make sure everyone is on the same page about the expectations of the job, sit down with your family and explain that you will be required to spend time away from home. It can be hard for anyone to know how challenging the away time will be until it is experienced, so keep an open mind about the type of schedule that will be required.

Once an understanding is set about possible lengths of time away from home, establish ways to keep in touch. Technology has come a long way and programs such as FaceTime and Skype allow drivers to see their families face to face when away from home. If possible, set a time to communicate with your family during your off time. Many truck stops offer free Wifi which allows you to communicate in real-time with your loved ones at home.

Finally, don't be afraid to ask for a change of lane/route if you feel you need a new experience or more family time. Keep in mind, however, that a change may not be possible immediately. By setting expectations early with your family, it allows room for understanding with them, also, that a change may not be currently possible.
